In May 2024, the EU adopted the Pact on Migration and Asylum (the Pact), which is a set of new rules to manage migration and create a common asylum system at EU level.
For Bulgaria, the New Migration Pact will mean a restructuring of the international protection procedure.
What will this look like in practice and what will be the impact on asylum seekers and those working with them on the ground?
In a series of three analyses, we will introduce you to the most important aspects related to the upcoming implementation of the new legislation in Bulgaria.
The first analysis – “The Anatomy of the EU Pact on Migration and Asylum. Desislava Todorova, advocacy expert, “CPT – Voice in Bulgaria”.
This analysis examines the introduction of screening of third-country nationals at external borders. This is the first stage of the newly adopted labyrinth of regulations and is particularly relevant for Bulgaria as an external border of the EU. The regulation on the introduction of screening raises key questions on access to territory, the practical implementation of the processes foreseen in the regulation, trends and risks of circumventing fundamental principles guaranteeing migrants’ and refugees’ rights.
