Time: 09:00 AM | Venue: Project Lab

Another perspective on the EU Migration debate: Bulgaria and the Euro-Mediterranean region

Time: 14:00 PM | Venue: Sofia

Since its entry in the European Union, Bulgaria has been at the forefront of the challenges facing the establishment of a common European asylum and migration policy. After the Global Approach to Migration in 2005, and even more in the wake of the “Arab uprisings”, the European Union has engaged in a number cooperation processes on “mobility and security” where Bulgaria is involved as a Member State. If collaboration with MENA countries has intensified over the past few years in the field of migration and asylum at governance level, civil society organisations also have been very active across the Mediterranean in ensuring that cooperation processes are respectful of human rights, including the rights of migrants and refugees.

EuroMed Rights and the Centre for Legal Aid are please to invite you to an event bringing together over 15 participants from Morocco to Italy, from Spain to Turkey, from Tunisia to Jordan, with Bulgarian civil society organisations and officials. It will provide a unique opportunity to hear bring the Euro-Mediterranean perspective in this important debate.

MIGRATION AND HUMAN SECURITY IN POST-CRISIS BULGARIA

Time: 13:30 PM | Venue: Sofia Hotel Balkan

Migration remains prominent on the European agenda even though it is a relatively recent issue of concern. Today, it is one of the key themes provoking political and civic debates. It is not by accident that many people see it as the litmus test that will determine the future of the European Union. Voices for more solidarity and calls for more security create an environment where finding sustainable solutions is becoming more and more challenging, and the need for dialogue – inevitable.

Migration is also central to the priorities of the Bulgarian Presidency of the Council of the EU. It is in this context that the conference aims to bring together institutional and civic visions, national and European perspectives. The event will be held in two panels: "Migration Policy and Presidency of the Council of the EU" and "Citizens' Perspectives and Initiatives". Representatives of Bulgarian institutions, members of the European Parliament, international organizations, European and Bulgarian non-governmental organizations are invited to participate.
An introductory speech will be delivered by Her Excellency Ms. Iliana Iotova, Vice President of the Republic of Bulgaria.
